Ranking .22LR ammo
I am about to buy my first .22LR and am trying to get opinions on which brand and "flavor" of ammo is best. Anyone care to rate and rank brands and varieties? I saw a video on Youtube in which a guy said CCI Minimag was the "Rolls Royce" of .22 ammo.

Re: Ranking .22LR ammo
My favorite for Meat are Qwik-Shok
Target stuff is CCI Plinlking Remington Gold Price is a pretty good indicator with 22LR E-A |
Re: Ranking .22LR ammo
CCI Mini-Mag (which I like very much) is reliable and good for plinking and small game hunting, but as I understand it, not many serious target shooters use it in competition.
So when you say "best", it depends on what you want to do with the ammo - check out this link for more info: "Ammo Roundup: .22 Long Rifle" by Chuck Hawks From personal experience, I would avoid Remington Thunderbolt - it leaves a bunch of lead in the barrel and is inconsistent as well. |

I only buy the yellowjackets....when I can find them.

Re: Ranking .22LR ammo
Hmm...."Best"
That is almost a impossible question to answer without knowing what your wanting the ammo to do Best could be the cheapest...(walmart bulk packs) Best could be the most acurate.....(Eley subsonics)(usually you have to try several brands n types of ammo to see what your gun likes) Best could be the fastest.......(Aquila Hypervelocity's) Best for hunting....(hollow point what ever you can hit what your aiming at with) I would start with the cheap stuff and work my way up to what ever usage you want |
Re: Ranking .22LR ammo
I'm a big fan of CCI Mini-mag, Stinger, and Velocitor. Accurate and consistent. Probably my first choices.
I also like Winchester Power Point HP. |

I agree with avoiding Remington Thunderbolt, I've never had very good luck with consistency with it. |
Re: Ranking .22LR ammo
I've been both blessed and cursed by .22s. Blessed with a Ruger Mk II that shoots accurately with inexpensive Federal bulk pack ammo and cursed with a Hi Standard pistol that favored caviar-flavored ammunition from across the pond. I also have an Ithaca X-15 Lightning that isn't fussy and likes bulk packaged ammunition.
Take care, Mod1 |

Re: Ranking .22LR ammo
I am partial to Federals, due to 100% positive ignition and price (but I am an action shooter...not bench rest). CCI gets my vote in that category.

Re: Ranking .22LR ammo
I've got bricks and bricks and bricks of Winchester Wilcats that I use for my fun plinking ammo.
I use Remington Yellow Jackets when I'm shooting at live things I'm not going to eat. Vermin or varmints. For hunting, I still think the CCI SGB design is the best going. I had jealously guarded a small hoard of them and used them only for hunting but not long ago CCI put them back in production. Just a super squirrel and rabbit bullet that leaves you lots of meat to eat. Gregg |
Re: Ranking .22LR ammo
Velocitor is hands-down the most lethal 22LR ammo on the market, but almost impossible to find now. Mini-Mags are my second preference.

Re: Ranking .22LR ammo
i hunt with cci velocitor and i find it suitable...
winchester wildcat and remington subsonic for tearing paper |

Re: Ranking .22LR ammo
Stingers are pretty mean and have always worked well for me.

Re: Ranking .22LR ammo
I am a real big fan of remington match and rem subsonic.

Re: Ranking .22LR ammo
Which of these rounds have lead and which ones don't? For obvious reasons, I'd like to avoid lead.

Think cci/speer is working on a green round. and winchester has one. Good luck... |
Re: Ranking .22LR ammo
Look around you and figure out what is easiest to get. Unless you're match shooting I find it unreasonable to seek a "best" alternative. That said, I like Rem Goldens for most everything. I also have various subsonics for the longer barreled bolters.
...and for the record...ask about the WORST alternatives and I think you'll get a more useful list. I agree with Ag Man on the T-Bolts. Yech! |
Re: Ranking .22LR ammo
I find that Aguilla SuperMaximumHighVelocity and CCI Stinger to be very accurate out of my rifle.
I have a Winchester Wildcat and it seems to like just about anything goes where I want it to. Different ammo just shoots different, but for the most part I can dial my scope in with about 3 shots. So any old 22 ammo will do for me. I haven't found a round yet that will not kill squirrels and beer cans. If I were going for an all around great round... rifles, pistols, or whatever I think CCI Velocitors are hard to beat. They perform well out of short barrels and long barrels. For minute of squirrels my number 1 choice is the first ammo I mentioned. Aguilla SMHVs will pretty much shoot the eye out of a squirrel out to 50 yards with my rifle, and at 1750 ft/sec I would venture to say you can cover a whole lot of the animal kingdom with head shots. IMO with a 22 everything is about accuracy, So if you have a good rifle that you can shoot small groups with, look out. Buy whatever you can get your hands on. If you have a bolt gun they usually go bang. |

If you're worried about the "magical-poisoning" properties of lead dust, don't - that's hype. |
Re: Ranking .22LR ammo
Are you getting a rifle? (semi or lever, pump, single etc.) semi's are pickier.
Or are you getting a handgun? same deal here about semi's. Revolvers usually can shoot shorts/longs as well, but you better check the specs. on it anyway. I have a u22 and it eats EVERYTHING. Very nice for the price. |
